Slechta earned a BS in Kinesiology and MS in Health and Physical Education, both from West Texas A&M University.
A 1985 graduate of Lake Highlands High School, Slechta earned varsity letters in football (two) and baseball (three). He moved into the college ranks as quarterback at East Texas State University where he was selected to the All-Lone Star Conference Team (1987). In 1990, he played quarterback at West Texas A&M University.
Slechta, who has 20 years coaching experience, is entering his fourth season with the Pirates as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator. He has extensive experience as an offensive coordinator, holding the title in 13 of the last 17 years.
Prior to his arrival in Wylie, Slechta served four years as the offensive coordinator at Sherman, where the offense earned a top 20 area ranking in three of those years. The 2008 Bearcat team averaged 438 yards and 46 points per game.
Prior to coaching at the high school level, Slechta coached quarterbacks and receivers as an assistant at his alma mater WTAMU. During the breakout 1994 season, the Buffs offense led the NCAA in yards passing (455 ypg), total offense (571 ypg), and scoring (46 ppg), while breaking 12 NCAA records and 50 school records.
Slechta and wife, Carrie, have a 7-year-old daughter, Sybil.
