Offensive Coordinator and Associate HC
Coach Royce Slechta is the Pirate Offensive Coordinator, Associate Head Coach and Quarterbacks Coach.
Coach Slechta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 1993, and a Master of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1994, both from West Texas A&M University.
A 1985 graduate of Lake Highlands High School, Coach Slechta earned varsity letters in football (two) and baseball (three). He moved into the college ranks as quarterback at East Texas State University where he was selected to the All-Lone Star Conference Team (1987). In 1990, he played quarterback at West Texas A&M University.
Slechta, who has 25 years coaching experience, is entering his ninth season with the Pirates as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator. He has extensive experience as an offensive coordinator, holding the title the last 17 years. He teaches U.S. History, and serves as an assistant golf coach in the spring.
Prior to his arrival in Wylie, Slechta served four years as the offensive coordinator at Sherman, where the offense earned a top 20 area ranking in three of those years. The 2008 Bearcat team averaged 438 yards and 46 points per game.
Prior to coaching at the high school level, Slechta coached quarterbacks and receivers as an assistant at his alma mater WTAMU. During the breakout 1994 season, the Buffs offense led the NCAA in yards passing (455 ypg), total offense (571 ypg), and scoring (46 ppg), while breaking 12 NCAA records and 50 school records.
Coach Slechta and his wife Carrie have been married 23 years, and have a 13 year-old daughter, Sybil. They are members of North Pointe Church of Christ in Sachse.
