FBC-Wylie HALL of HONOR Scott Phillips

Scott Phillips, 2005 Inductee, has led a life pursuing all of his dreams.  He is the only Hall of Honor member who has served in the military as a Navy SEAL and is a minister of the Gospel.

Scott played football, basketball and track while at Wylie High School.  Lettering in football three years, he racked up a few honors.  As a junior and senior, he was team captain and 1st team All-District middle linebacker.  Both years, he was named Defensive player of the year. His senior year, Scott was awarded 1st team All-State honors.   One of his most memorable games was his senior year as he and his teammates battled together against Southlake Carroll in the 3A Area Finals Play-off game.  The Pirates were Bi-District champs beating Mabank 24-0.  Southlake Carroll became the Area champs with their 27-12 win against Wylie.

After graduating in 1988, Scott walked on and was given a scholarship to attend Southern Methodist University.  He then attended a couple of other colleges, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy to become a Navy SEAL.  He served in the military a total of nine years and traveled to California, Georgia, Hawaii and was deployed to Korea.  After his tour of duty, he became a Naval Reserve and served from 2004-2007.

In 2007, Phillips felt called to full-time ministry and applied for the Children’s Pastor position that was open at First Baptist Wylie.  He has served in that capacity the last six years.  This month, he transitioned into a new position as Connections Pastor.

Remaining an ardent sportsman, Scott is an avid biker, firearms instructor, sports fan and martial artist.

Scott married his high school sweetheart, Lori Caskey(WHS ’89), They have four sons -  Gus, Barrett, Grayson and Gage.

His words of wisdom to Pirate athletes, “Keep playing your chosen sport for as long as you can, at whatever level you can…..regardless if you are a starter or not, keep at it…don’t quit…play until you can’t play anymore.”  To all Pirates, “Pray like everything depends on God and work like everything depends on you and no matter what never, ever quit!

Here is the article and the link is toward the bottom. Thanks.

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (Sept. 15) – Central Oklahoma's Seth Hiddink was one of just 22 players from around the country named to the 2015 AllState American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team® that was announced Tuesday.

In its 24th year, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is the most esteemed off-the-field honor in college football and is comprised of student-athletes who have made a positive impact on others and their communities with their acts of service while maintaining a strong academic standing.
Hiddink is a junior pre-vet major from Wylie, Texas in his third year as UCO's top place-kicker and has been an active volunteer with both the Reason to Believe Therapeutic Riding Center and Oakridge Equine Hospital in Guthrie.  He's made 75 extra points and 28 field goals, owns the school career record for consecutive PATs (50) and is nearing UCO's top-10 list in all-time scoring with 159 points.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® program received a record 197 nominations this summer and 22 make up the final team, with 11 of those coming from NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 from NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and NAIA.
"The members of the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® are an excellent example of hard work and dedication, both on the field and off," AFCA executive director Grant Teaff said.  "These 22 student-athletes have shown, through countless hours of community service and work on the football field, that you can give more of yourself to help those around you.  It's a privilege to team up with Allstate to honor these students."

College football fans can vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® captain at through Nov. 25, 20015.  The team captain and his fellow award recipients will be invited to New Orleans to participate in a community project before the 2016 Allstate® Sugar Bowl.

FBC WYLIE-Hall of Honor Staci Watkins Sherman

Hall of Honor 1998 Inductee Staci Watkins Sherman comes from a long line of “Pirates”.  Her grandmother, Irene Watkins, taught in the Wylie Independent School District for many years.  Both of her parents are Wylie graduates and her father, Wally Watkins, who was very instrumental in the school district, has an Elementary school named after him.  With this strong "Pirate blood", it is no surprise that Staci went on to represent the Pirate family as she did.

Staci graduated in the WHS class of 1979.  During her four years at Wylie High, she was a four year letter winner in both volleyball and basketball.  She played tennis three years and ran track for two years.   She received All-District honors in volleyball, basketball and tennis.  One of her fondest memories as a Pirate, was riding the old Pirate bus, especially after a big win on the road!

Upon graduation, Staci received a four year full scholarship to East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) for Volleyball.  She, of course, left her mark there as she was named Most Valuable freshmen (1979) and Honorable-mention All-American (1980).  Sherman was an integral part of the 1980 Lady Lions Volleyball Team, which acrued eight-straight wins in the post season to reach the NAIA Championship finals against Azuza Pacific.  The Lady Lions lost to Azuza Pacific in the First annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship tourney ever held.  Her successes continued as she was named Team MVP and selected Lone Star Conference 1st team in 1983.  In 2005, Staci was inducted into the Texas A&M Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame.  Her 1980 Volleyball team was inducted in 2010. She has served on the Texas A&M Commerce Athletic Board of Directors since 1998.

Finishing her degree in K-12 Physical Education and Health, Staci taught and coached in various Texas schools for twenty-nine years.  Leading up to her retirement, she taught 5th/6th Grade Physical Education at Draper Intermediate.

Her encouragement to fellow Pirates, “Work hard and push yourself everyday!  Enjoy every minute of your athletic career because it goes by really fast!  Most important – HAVE FUN!”
