Pirates Finish As Regional Semifinalists

In spite of the bitterly cold conditions, the Pirates valiantly attempted to overcome the Highland Park Scots to no avail.  The Scots defeated the Pirates 27-14 to become the Region II Champions.  They will now face Denton Guyer in the State semifinals next Saturday.

Carsen Cook finished the night with 16 completions of 38 attempts for 228 yards.  Kameron Kelly had the two touchdowns of the night with 121 receiving yards overall.

The Pirate defense attempted to hold the Scots on several drives forcing them to punt or turn over.  It did not prove enough though, as their defense did the same.

The 2013 Pirates concluded their season going four deep in the playoffs and having the title of Regional Semi-finalist.  Not a bad run at all!

First Baptist Wylie Hall of Honor Profile - Chris Durbin

In 2012, there was only one inductee into the Wylie Hall of Honor, 1999 graduate Chris Durbin. A baseball player, Chris played all four years of high school.  Coached by Kyle Craighead, his stats were quite impressive with a .520 batting average, 10 home runs and 48 RBI his junior year and a .547 batting average with 16 home runs and 53 RBI as a senior.

“Chris was an outstanding player for me his junior and senior years at Wylie High School”, said Kyle Craighead.  “He was a 2-time All-State player who led our team in virtually every offensive category.  He had the uncanny ability to come up with the big hit every time one was needed.  As a senior, he led the area in both home runs and RBI’s.  Not only was he an outstanding player, but he was also one of the undisputed leaders on our team.”

When he looked back, Chris said that his 1999 season was the most exciting.  “Our team had a very good chance at winning a state championship. However, Grapevine and their pitcher, Ben King, seemed to put a kink in our plans.”  He also noted that he and Andrew McGuire, from Sherman High School, were in a tight home run race that year, making it an even more exciting season.  “We had a very cohesive team that worked very well together,” Chris shared.

Because of his tremendous athletic ability, many colleges recruited him like Texas A&M, UT and TCU, but he decided upon Baylor.  Chris led the Bears in several hitting categories and ranks among the all-time career leaders there.  Chris led in batting average (5th, .344), doubles (4th, 23), home runs (9th, 23), extra base hits (6th, 85), total bases (8th,346), and slugging percentage (9th, .569).  He was considered to have the best arm among outfielders in the Big 12.  Some of his college honors include being selected All-Big 12 three years and All-American selection his senior year.

Durbin went on to play professionally being drafted in 2003 in the 10th round by the Boston Red Sox.  He played in their minor league for four years.  Retiring from baseball in 2007, Chris now lives in Grand Prairie with his wife, Kathryn Taylor-Durbin.  They have been married for ten years and have three sons, Taylor - 8, Braydon - 5 and Zachary - 2. Chris has worked as a police officer in Grand Prairie the last six years.

His advice to Pirate athletes and students, “I would tell them to choose their friends wisely and enjoy the time they have with their friends and family. From experience, I can say that the relationships we build with others is what truly matters in this world.”

“Additionally, I would tell them to be a positive influence in each other's lives and to have the courage to stand up for what is right. So many times we choose to sit quietly and go with the flow when we know something is not right. As a teenager, sometimes you do not realize the danger you put yourself in.  One wrong decision or choice can have huge consequences on your future. As a teen, we think we are invincible until something bad happens. Whether it be a bad choice with drinking, drugs, criminal activity, or racing your new car your parents bought you. It just takes one mistake to change your future. One of the most important things, and probably hardest to accept, is to "Control what I can control."  The only thing we have control over in this life is the choices we make and how we react to situations and how we respond to the choices that others make.”

“As a high school athlete you're "living the dream". But those dreams can be shattered and your future can change instantly if you aren't careful with your decisions.  As a young adult, you have your whole life ahead of you and I believe you have the ability to do great things and make a difference in this world. Never allow anyone to tell you that "you can't" or "you're not good enough".  Believe in yourself and your abilities, otherwise no one else will.  Hold yourself accountable if you fail and believe that you will win/succeed in the long run. To be a "winner" you have to be able to overcome adversity and persevere through the hard times.”

• #11 Boomer Bakich (Jr. DB): 59 tackles (43 solo), 3 TFL, 1 S, 7 PD, 2 Int,

Wylie and Highland Park have a longstanding history.  This is the 15th time the two teams will meet, with Wylie having come very close but never being able to defeat them.   In 2004, Highland Park won by 1 point and in 2010 and 2011 by 3.  Friday night though will be the first time the two teams meet in the playoffs.

Winning last week’s round of the regional semifinals was long overdue for the Highland Park Scots, who had lost in that round from 2008 to 2011.   Last season, they were eliminated in the first round. Although they lost their first game this season, they have been undeterred since, with 12 straight wins.

“This is a “normal” Highland Park team,” said Coach Bill Howard.   “They are methodical and very deliberate in what they do.   We have to execute, stay solid and play 48 minutes.  They will be fundamentally sound.  We will have to make plays and stop them from making plays.   We have to stay balanced.  Right now Highland Park is in the way of our goal, the goal we set at the beginning of the year.  We just have to play well to beat them.”

The clash of the Scots and the Pirates will take place on Friday at Allen Eagle Stadium with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Pirates Advance to Quarterfinals!

The Pirates had a tremendous victory tonight as they defeated the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears 46-64.  Having dedicated the game to Austin Stryker made it a sweeter win.

It was a hard fought battle as both teams gave it their all in the first half. South Oak Cliff though was overcome in the 3rd by the Wylie defense and could not get a score on the board, while the Pirate offense continued to score, putting up no less than two touchdowns each quarter.

Statistical leaders for the Pirate offense were Carsen Cook, Dontae Slay and Alex Wesley.  Kameron Kelly once again had a great game playing both offense and defense.

The Pirates advance to the Quarterfinals and will face Highland Park.  Details of the game will follow.

STATISTICAL LEADERS FOR THE PIRATES
PASS: Carsen Cook, 15-21, 284 yds, 2 TDs
RUSH: Dontae Slay, 13 car, 77 yds, 0 TDs

First Baptist Wylie Hall of Honor Profile -

Mary Ann Groves Nall

Mary Ann Groves Nall was one of the first inductees into the Wylie Sports Hall of Honor when it started back in 1998.  A 1964 graduate, Mary Ann played varsity basketball and lettered all four years of high school.  “Back then that was the only [high school] sport we [girls] played”, she said.  Playing “post” or center as it is now known, she was named All-district first team all four years.   Their team was quite successful and each year they made the play-offs.  “Each time we never got past regionals, but the play-off times were always special,” Mary Ann said. Their coach was R.C. Dodd and Mary Ann had such fond memories of him.  “He was such a wonderful person and he touched so many lives as a coach.  I just admire him so much and all he did for our team and school.  He was our mainstay.”

Upon graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth, in June and set up home in Wylie. Quite the athlete, Kenneth was also inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2009.  They raised their family here in Wylie and have been an integral part of the community. Mary Ann and Kenneth had been married 42 years when he passed away in 2006. Their two daughters, Stacey Cobb (WHS ‘84) and Christi Keisler (WHS ’88) have given them four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with another one on the way in December. They keep her very busy.  She has also been very active in her church, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, over the years teaching Sunday school and helping in different areas.

“We had so much fun back in those days.  We had a wonderful time and I give so much credit to Coach R.C. Dodd for the example he was to us.  Everyone loved him so much.  He kept a lot kids on the straight and narrow!”  Her exhort to Pirate athletes and students alike, “Respect your coaches and your teammates.  Be proud of your school and do the best you can to represent it and your fellow students.”

The Jaguars’ 29-27 win over Lancaster gave them their place in the playoffs this season.  Having been bi-district champs in 2010 and 2011, they longed to return.  Beating Nacogdoches 25-15 last week gave them that victory.  Hoping to further their run, they will face the Pirates this week in the area round.  Their last significant run was in 2004 when they were Quarterfinalist.

“Mansfield Summit is a very good team,” said Head Coach Bill Howard. “They run a 3-4 defense and spread offense.  They play very much like we do.  Their special teams are almost identical to ours.  They have a very good kicker.   Friday night is going to come down to the team that executes the best and takes care of the ball.  The weather is not going to be very good probably, so the team that can mentally overcome that and not worry about it and just go out and play the game, is probably the one that is going to win.”

Summing it up Howard said, “We are looking pretty good.  We had good practices this week…we are ready to go!”

Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. at Southlake Carroll Dragon Stadium.  Come out and support the Pirates!

FOOTBALL TEAM SEND-OFF

There will be a send-off for the team in front of Wylie Stadium tomorrow Friday 11/28 at 3:15 p.m.   Please make plans to join us for a spirited send-off.   Bring your signs, posters and Pirate Cheer. . . AHMO!!!

GAME DEDICATION

The Pirates have decided to dedicate tomorrow's game against SOC Golden Bears to Austin Stryker, lone survivor of the deadly Arizona car crash that killed his parents and twin brother.   The Stryker Family are from Allen, TX and were on their way to Las Vegas for a hockey tournament at the time of the crash.

As a tribute to Austin, the team is going to chant "Austin" instead of AHMO when they run out of the inflatable at the beginning of the game.  Please join the Pirates in solidarity and prayers for Austin as he deals with the death of his parents and twin brother.

Having a 38-8 record the last four seasons, South Oak Cliff is a regular contender in the Class 4A playoffs.  2010 was the last time though, they were Bi-district champs.  This season, they have advanced to the Regional round with an 11-1 record.  The last Golden Bears team with a longer run was the 2007 squad led by current Lancaster coach Chris Gilbert, which made it to the Regional semifinals.

“South Oak Cliff is a very talented team,” said Pirate Head Coach Bill Howard.  “Their quarterback can throw and run the ball.  They have a good running back and a corps of good receivers.  Their offensive line is pretty good and their defense can get after it.  It’s going to be a tremendous fight Friday night.”

In looking at what the Pirates will need to do he said, “They have a lot of big playmakers.  We have to play good defense and tackle good on defense.  Their defense have speed and are very disciplined.   They will put a lot of pressure on us.  We’ve got to pick up the blitzes and get the ball out to our receivers and playmakers, who have to make plays.”

Although it’s Thanksgiving week, the Pirates have been practicing every day and have had a very good week.  “This is our 8th Thanksgiving day in the last 12 years that we have practiced on, so we have much to be thankful for,” remarked Coach Howard.

The Pirates will face the Golden Bears on Friday at Allen Eagle Stadium with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets will be $10 at the gate.  Come out and support the Pirates as they contend for the Regional title.
