The Mavericks clinched their place in the playoffs when they defeated Pine Tree 45-42 two weeks ago.  In his first season as head coach, Clint Harper, is working to rebuild the program that has seen a 5A Division I title back in 1990 and played for 4A Division I state titles in 2004 and 2005.  Marshall’s last playoff win was in 2009 as they beat Corsicana in the second-round and their last appearance in 2010.

When asked what he expects from Marshall, Head Coach Bill Howard said, “They play hard. They had a very tough district schedule.  They live on the big play.  We can’t allow them to have the big play.  I expect Marshall to come out and give us everything they’ve got.”

In giving an overall picture of the Pirates he said,”On defense we are getting a lot more consistent.  The outside linebackers have really stepped up their play.  Kloza and Acuay are both playing really well. Getting TK Rockwell back will help us.  Our D line is playing solid.  Our linebackers/secondary have sured things up.  It’s nice to have a healthy Jarell Brown back.  Our offensive line is starting to gel.  Our receivers are starting to become better blockers.  I see things happening in the right way.  We just have to focus on the mission at hand.”

The two teams meet for the first time on Friday, November 15 at Midlothian ISD Multi-purpose Sports Complex with kick-off at 7:30 p.m.

First Baptist Wylie Hall of Honor Profile - Gary Foster

Gary Foster was inducted into the Wylie Hall of Honor in 1999 at its second annual induction.  He was among twelve former athletes and two coaches inducted that year.

Foster graduated from Wylie High in 1977 and lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track.  He garnered many honors during his junior and senior years.   He was presented the “Wylie High Outstanding Back” award, selected “Offensive Player of the Year” for District 12AA, voted Quarterback and Offensive Player of the year by The McKinney Courier and All-Metro Honorable Mention by The Dallas Times Herald his senior year.  His senior year, he had All District honors in Basketball and Baseball and also went to regional finals for Long jump and High jump in Track.

“Going to the first play-off game my senior year and winning was probably my fondest memory.  Back then you had to win district in order to go to the play-offs.  We made it all the way to the regional finals”, shared Mr. Foster.

After high school, Gary received a football scholarship to attend Northeastern Oklahoma State University.  His sophomore year, he was named the Conference Offensive Player of the Week.  He attended two years.

The last twenty-eight years, Foster has been in the commercial drywall business.  He and his family have remained in the Wylie area, living in St. Paul.  His wife, Sandee and he have been married twenty-eight years.  They have two children, Chase (WHS ’06), who is a manager at Wal-Mart and Brooke (WHS ’08), who attends University of North Texas and is on the softball team.  They have one grandson, Layton.  In his free time, Gary is an avid golfer.

“Always work hard every day and try to get better every day” was his encouragement to Pirates and Pirate athletes.  “Always try to improve…as the only way you’ll succeed is to get better.”
