Pirates Come Up Short Against Raiders
The Pirates took a 38-37 lead on a 25-yard pass play from Carsen Cook to Kalen Winkler with 6:34 to go in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders came right back to regain the lead and take the eventual win 46-38.
Wylie East jumps to 2-0 versus District 13-4A opponents while the Pirates fall to 0-2.
Wylie hosts Greenville in next Friday's contest. It will be Future Pirates Night. The Lions are also looking for their first district victory with losses to Royse City and Lovejoy.

Albertson's Game of the Week, Pirates versus Wylie East
The Pirates take on a talented Wylie East squad tonight at Wylie Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Wylie is the home team for the Maroon Out contest.
The Raiders come in with one of the hottest Class 4A offenses in the area. QB Garrett McCain has already thrown for more than 1100 yards in this young season with 12 touchdown passes and only two interceptions.
The junior signal caller has a pair of gifted outside receivers in Marcell Ateman and Quan Jones. Both have exceptional height and athleticism. Ateman, who has committed to Oklahoma State University, leads the DFW area with 29 receptions for 548 yards and six touchdowns. Jones, who is committed to Baylor, has nine catches for 295 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Jesse Brubaker, committed to SMU, adds another physical presence.
After graduating a solid offensive line last year, this all-new version has developed more quickly than expected. That has paved the way for tailback Jabari Anderson to put up strong numbers. The senior has posted 78 carries for 521 yards.
Overall, East has posted a 3-1 record (1-0 district) with wins over Red Oak 52-21, Denton Ryan 34-31, and Denison 57-36. Tonight’s game will tell if the 30-10 loss to Frisco Liberty (Week One) was an aberration or an indication of chinks in the Raider armor. And it is worth noting that the East defense gave up 36 points to a Denison team that was averaging just 10 points per game through the non-district portion of the schedule.
The Pirates have been bitten by the injury bug early and often this season. The 0-4 record is not indicative of their abilities. Those first three games that include two overtime losses have no bearing on the District 13-4A race. For all practical purposes, they are 0-1 with six games to go. There's still plenty of time to get this program back on the map in 2012. Fans should expect both the Pirates and Raiders to be in the postseason mix come November.

Athletic Training Tip of the Week, Ankle Injuries
From Pirates Head Athletic Trainer Eric Maxey
When should I take my child to the doctor after an ankle injury?
The ankle is a fairly complex joint to evaluate and diagnose. Ankle sprains are the most common injury seen in the athletic training room and are suffered by athletes in general. If an athlete has not reached full maturity, they will often have open growth plates on the ends of their bones. These growth plates are very susceptible to fracture during injury.
Some of the rules we use are
1) if they can’t bear weight,
2) is there noticeable swelling or deformity,
3) is there a high level of pain associated with the injury.
While these three rules can be helpful, they are not full proof. Some athletes will be able to bear weight, have a normal looking ankle and report a low level of pain but may have a fracture. Another good indication that a referral is needed is if the ankle continues to hurt after a couple of days of rest and does not appear to be getting better.
Parents tend to know their children best and if they have any concerns about a possible fracture, it is always smart to have the ankle evaluated by health care provider.
The Spiritwear trailer will be at WHS selling again Friday during lunch hours.
