Athletic Training Tip of the Week, Ankle Injuries
From Pirates Head Athletic Trainer Eric Maxey
When should I take my child to the doctor after an ankle injury?
The ankle is a fairly complex joint to evaluate and diagnose. Ankle sprains are the most common injury seen in the athletic training room and are suffered by athletes in general. If an athlete has not reached full maturity, they will often have open growth plates on the ends of their bones. These growth plates are very susceptible to fracture during injury.
Some of the rules we use are
1) if they can’t bear weight,
2) is there noticeable swelling or deformity,
3) is there a high level of pain associated with the injury.
While these three rules can be helpful, they are not full proof. Some athletes will be able to bear weight, have a normal looking ankle and report a low level of pain but may have a fracture. Another good indication that a referral is needed is if the ankle continues to hurt after a couple of days of rest and does not appear to be getting better.
Parents tend to know their children best and if they have any concerns about a possible fracture, it is always smart to have the ankle evaluated by health care provider.
The Spiritwear trailer will be at WHS selling again Friday during lunch hours.

Albertson’s Game of the Week: Pirates at Lovejoy
Lovejoy comes into the District 13-4A opener with a 3-0 record and ranked No. 17 in Class 4A in a recent Dallas Morning News poll. Averaging 42 points per game, they have posted wins over Frisco Heritage (53-14), Forney (38-16) and Frisco (35-24).
A successful Class 3A program, they made the jump to Class 4A in the last realignment. Their most telling victory came against Frisco. Down 24-7 at the half, they made necessary adjustments to score 28 second-half points while holding the Lions scoreless.
Led by freshman QB Bowman Sells, the Leopards are not only doing a good job of moving the chains but have demonstrated big-play capability. The offensive line has provided the protection Sells needs to operate while also creating opportunities for Nick LaSane, one of the area’s most effective runners.
Daniel Sefcik is their playmaker. He can carry the ball and catch passes, as well as coming in at wildcat in some goal line situations. He also lines up at free safety on the defensive side.

Albertson's Game of the Week: Mesquite Poteet Preview
Two games into the 2012 season and the Pirates have already been battle tested with back-to-back overtime losses on the road at Class 5A Sachse 44-36 and against top-ranked Class 4A West Mesquite 34-33. Despite the setbacks, the Pirates have shown themselves to be hard working and mentally tough.
The final tune-up game prior to the start of District 13-4A play comes tonight (Sept. 14) against Mesquite Poteet in Wylie’s home opener.
Poteet comes in with a 2-0 record and ranked No. 6 among area Class 4A schools in a recent Dallas Morning News poll. They posted wins over Frisco Liberty 35-14 and Arlington Seguin 61-22 and can be expected to come into Friday’s game with a lot of confidence.
They are a well-rounded crew led by a big and mobile signal caller in Tanner Ramsey (6-foot-2, 220). Ramsey has good protection up front and a pack of skill players who can make things happen.
Head coach Bill Howard said receiver Verkedric Vaughns is their playmaker. He has exceptional speed and plays both sides of the ball.
Receiver Buck Rodges and tailback James Swindle are notable performers as well.
Howard said linebacker Demario Dixon is a leader on defense along with team captain Patrick Brackens.
Rodney Douglas is a dangerous return man who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in Poteet’s opening week.
